Integrated 10/100/1000 Quad Gigabit Ethernet Transceiver
 
General Description

The RTL8214 and RTL8214F integrate Quad independent Gigabit Ethernet transceivers into a single monolithic IC in a thermal-enhanced, 128-pin LQFP E-PAD and TFBGA-292 package. The device performs all the physical layer (PHY) functions for 1000Base-T, 100Base-TX, and 10Base-T Ethernet on category 5 UTP cable, except 1000Base-T half duplex. 10Base-T functionality can also be achieved on standard category 3 or 4 cable.

The RTL8214 and RTL8214F include PCS, PMA, and PMD sub-layers, and operate as line drivers. They perform encoding/decoding, clock/data recovery, digital adaptive equalization, echo cancelation, crosstalk elimination, as well as other required supporting circuit functions. They also integrate an internal hybrid that allows the use of inexpensive 1:1 transformer modules.

To further reduce PCB trace complexity, the RTL8214(F) provides an innovative 2.5Gbps serial interface – RSGMII. All transceivers can communicate with the MAC simultaneously through the same RSGMII interface.

The RTL8214(F) adopts mixed mode 0.11µm CMOS technology and analog line driver architecture. Enhanced ‘Green’ power-saving features allow very low power consumption.

  • Loopback mode for diagnostics
  • Line driver architecture with low power consumption < 500mW/port
  • Easy layout, good EMI, and good thermal performance
  • 3.3V and 1.05V power supply
  • 0.11µm CMOS process
